 Corruption in India's Armed Forces: Why Worry About Neighbours Before Fixing Your Own House?

Allegations of corruption within India's armed forces continue to surface with alarming regularity. According to official data and reports published by Indian newspapers, more than 1,080 corruption cases have been recorded since 2010, with nearly 97% involving the Indian Army. Major Indian media outlets, including The Times of India, Hindustan Times, and The Indian Express, have repeatedly reported on such incidents.

Recently, Hindustan Times reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered 11 corruption cases involving 15 military officers. The Times of India reported the arrest of a Lieutenant Colonel on bribery charges. Meanwhile, The Indian Express covered the conviction of an Army Colonel in Ladakh, who was sentenced to six years' imprisonment and dismissed from service for corruption. In another high-profile case, court-martial proceedings are underway against 20 individuals, including a Major General, over the Kapurthala SSB recruitment scandal.

These cases point to irregularities in procurement, recruitment, construction projects, and logistics, highlighting concerns across multiple sectors of the defence establishment. Although India's Ministry of Defence continues to emphasize a policy of "zero tolerance" toward corruption, many analysts argue that the problem is not isolated but rather systemic and structural.

At the same time, certain circles in India frequently criticize the internal affairs of neighbouring countries' armed forces, including issues such as the naming of battalions or military companies. According to analysts, such criticism appears inconsistent when viewed against the backdrop of widespread corruption allegations within India's own military establishment.

Many observers warn that unless India can ensure greater transparency and accountability despite its massive defence budget, corruption will continue to undermine both national security and the morale of its armed forces. They argue that India's foremost priority should be addressing corruption within its own military before directing criticism toward its neighbours.
