False Claims of Attack on Chakma Homes and Buddhist Monastery in Ukhiya: No Verifiable Evidence Found
The Global Arakan Network (GAN) recently circulated claims alleging that a Buddhist monastery and homes belonging to the Chakma community in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox's Bazar, were attacked and vandalized. However, an analysis of the images accompanying the allegations has found no visible evidence supporting those claims.
In a post published on 3 August 2026, GAN alleged that on 31 July 2026, a group of approximately 200 people attacked and vandalized four Chakma family homes and a Buddhist monastery in Chenchari (also spelled Chhenchhari) village under Jaliapalong Union in Ukhiya. The post attributed the alleged attack to a land dispute and accused local authorities and the Forest Department of failing to intervene. It further claimed that the attackers were attempting to seize ancestral land belonging to the Chakma community and that statues of the Buddha inside the monastery had been vandalized.
However, an examination of the images circulated in connection with the allegations shows that the Buddha statue and other religious statues inside the monastery appear completely intact. No visible signs of damage, vandalism, or physical destruction can be identified in the available images. As a result, the claim that the monastery was vandalized is not supported by the visual evidence reviewed.
The analysis also found that one of the images had been edited and republished as two separate photographs, suggesting that the visual material may have been deliberately presented in a way that reinforces the narrative of an attack.
The allegations against local authorities and the Forest Department appear to question the effectiveness of state institutions and the protection of minority communities. Observers also note attempts to frame the incident as an issue of international human rights and religious freedom, potentially to draw international attention and undermine Bangladesh's image abroad.
It should be noted that similar allegations have also appeared in some local media reports, and photographs purportedly showing damaged Buddha statues have circulated on social media. However, those images and claims have not yet been independently verified through fact-checking. A thorough investigation by the local administration and the relevant authorities is necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
