Bangladesh’s New Emergence on the World Stage Under Khalilur Rahman’s Leadership

In the complex arena of global diplomacy, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has now emerged as one of the brightest symbols of Bangladesh’s new confidence. Under his leadership, Bangladesh’s foreign policy appears to be sending a new message: Bangladesh does not want to remain in anyone’s shadow; rather, it wants to establish its own place on the world stage by putting its national interests and dignity first.

The strongest proof of this is Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. In the election held on June 2, 2026, he secured 99 votes out of 190, defeating Cyprus’s candidate Andreas Kakouris, who received 91 votes. Four decades later, a Bangladeshi has once again assumed this prestigious responsibility. Before this, Humayun Rashid Choudhury became President of the 41st Session of the UN General Assembly in 1986.

This is not merely a personal achievement for a foreign minister; it is also an international recognition of Bangladesh’s diplomatic capacity. The United Nations itself has stated that Dr. Khalilur Rahman will face important responsibilities, including rebuilding trust in the multilateral system, addressing global crises, and advancing UN reform. His one-year term will begin on September 8, 2026.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s greatest strength is his long diplomatic experience. He joined Bangladesh’s Foreign Service in 1979 and, over the following four decades, served in various important positions in diplomacy and multilateral affairs. He also has experience working at the United Nations offices in New York and Geneva. Before becoming Foreign Minister, he served as National Security Adviser and as the High Representative for Rohingya Affairs.

Therefore, viewing him merely as a minister would fail to capture the full extent of his capabilities. He is simultaneously an experienced diplomat, a seasoned player in multilateral negotiations, and a statesman who has represented Bangladesh in the international arena for decades.

This is precisely where the greatest potential of Bangladesh’s current foreign policy lies. In dealing with China, the United States, India, Türkiye, the Middle East and other major powers, Bangladesh’s objective should be balance, mutual interests and national dignity. Maintaining relations with everyone while avoiding excessive dependence on any single power and making its own decisions is the hallmark of mature diplomacy for an independent state.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s election to one of the United Nations’ most prestigious representative positions has further strengthened that confidence. Following his election, various countries and organizations, including the United States, India, China, Pakistan, the Maldives and the African Union, congratulated him.

Most importantly, the UN election demonstrated how broad Bangladesh’s diplomatic acceptance can be among the world’s 193 countries. The 99 votes were not merely a number for an individual; they also reflected international confidence in a country.

Bangladesh’s foreign policy therefore stands before a new opportunity. By making effective use of this opportunity, Bangladesh can build a stronger position on issues concerning its economic interests, national security, migrant workers, climate justice and regional stability.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s success, therefore, is not merely his own success. It is a success for Bangladesh’s diplomacy, a success for Bangladesh’s capabilities, and a success for Bangladesh’s national dignity on the world stage.

Bangladesh is against no one; Bangladesh stands for itself.

And with that confidence, under the leadership of Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh is making a new emergence on the world stage.
